Basic Internet Rules to Keep Me Safe Presented by Internet 101
Police and partners . . . working together to web-proof our communities. |
None |
3D image of Internet safety “zone”. Zip the Internet safety police car zooms into the picture. |
|
Sound of car zooming in with siren and music begins (plays throughout presentation). Digital voice (Klik, who speaks throughout presentation): People think that they are invisible while navigating on the Internet because they are in front of a computer. |
Car doors swing open and camera zooms in to show empty front seat. |
|
In my case it’s true. I am an Internet officer and I am protected by Zip, my cyber-mobile. |
3D image of Klik the Robot appears in front seat of car. Fades in and out. Camera zooms into car, and into computer screen in car. |
|
Look closely. I will show you traces that we leave behind without even knowing it. |
3D image of a search engine named Poodle fills the screen, with image of robot dog Poodle on it. |
|
Let’s go see if my dog Poodle is ready to help us with the rules on Internet safety. |
Close up of Poodle’s face. |
|
Poodle… Come! |
Poodle’s head emerges from computer screen in patrol car, beside figure of Klik. |
|
Remember that you are in charge of the situation. You have the ability to predict danger and to disappear in a flash. Unlike others, you won’t fall in the trap. |
Poodle is wiggling, still half stuck in computer screen in car. Text superimposed overtop. |
#1 |
While I help Poodle get out of trouble, here’s rule #1. |
Photo of girl (Sarah) smiling and pointing at drawing of computer. Drawing changes to picture of bedroom and Sarah’s photo becomes one where she is frowning. |
|
Sarah finally got a computer. She is very happy. Her father installs it in her room. She is not happy. |
Photo of Sarah becomes one where she is holding one finger up. Drawing of bedroom changes to one of family room and photo of Sarah changes to one where she is smiling. |
|
Sarah is well informed on the Internet safety rules and knows rule #1 very well. She explains to her father that the computer should be in the family room instead, as it will be safer. |
Klik jumps out of car and car pulls away, leaving Poodle hanging in the air. Poodle jumps down and Klik follows dog as Poodle sniffs sign post. 3D of #2 falls from above to the ground. |
#2 |
Poodle! Oh… Poodle seems to have sniffed something. Hey Poodle, you found rule #2. |
Photo of Sarah holding up two fingers. |
|
Here’s rule #2. |
Photo of Sarah smiling. The name Girl11 appears behind her. Photo changes to Sarah holding out hand to stop, and Girl11 disappears. The name BlueSky appears instead, and photo changes to one of Sarah smiling. |
Girl11 BlueSky |
Sarah is thinking of a nickname she could use to chat online. She thinks of using Girl11. But remembering rule #2, she decides to use BlueSky. |
The name BlueSky disappears and Girl11 reappears beside photo of Sarah. |
Girl11 - Girl - 11 years old |
Sarah knows very well that if she uses Girl11, anyone would know, at first glance, that she is a girl and that she is 11 years old. |
Photo and name disappears and drawing of hills with a blue sky appears. Photo of Sarah smiling and pointing at drawing appears superimposed overtop. Photo changes to Sarah holding out her hand to stop, then pointing at camera. |
|
Using BlueSky as a nickname instead will not reveal anything about her. Like Sarah, always use a nickname that will not reveal anything about you. |
Poodle climbs fallen stop sign, which teeters and knocks 3D image of #3 up in the air. The number knocks Poodle off stop sign. Poodle returns to stand with Klik. |
#3 |
There you go Poodle, hey put that back! Be careful! You’ll be in trouble again! Are you okay? Good dog! You just found rule #3. |
Photo of Sarah holding out her hand to stop, with the number three written on it. |
|
Here’s rule #3. |
Photo of Sarah holding out hand, about to receive paper from drawing of another girl. Drawing of school in background. Fades to photo of Sarah smiling, with drawing of house behind. |
|
One of Sarah’s friends gave her a website address where she can subscribe and receive a free gift. Sarah can’t wait to get home to subscribe and receive the free gift. |
Photo of Sarah typing, drawing of computer in front of her. Text superimposed overtop. Drawing of computer becomes drawing of personal information form. Photo becomes close up of Sarah’s face, then zooms out to show Sarah holding out hand to stop with the number three written on it. |
http:/www. |
Once she gets to the website and starts filling out the form, she notices that there is something wrong. She knows rule #3 very well. |
Photo of Sarah typing, drawing of computer in front of her. Box appears in front of her showing another photo of Sarah, then her name, the @ sign, a drawing of a phone, a drawing of her house, a drawing of her school and a drawing of a credit card. |
|
Never provide your picture, your name, your email address, your phone number, your home address, the name of your school or your parent’s credit card number. |
Photo of Sarah holding out hand to stop with the number three written on it. Drawing of personal information form behind her. Fades to photo of Sarah pointing at camera, then close up of Sarah’s face. |
|
Never give information about yourself or other people on the Internet. |
Photo of Sarah typing, drawing of keyboard in front of her and personal information form behind her. Fades to close up of Sarah’s face. |
|
If you want to enter a contest to win free items, talk to your parents. A secure site will ask very limited information about you and will ask for your parent’s permission. |
Klik encouraging Poodle to run forward and jump over construction sawhorses. Poodle knocks over sawhorse and 3D image of #4 rolls along ground. Camera zooms in on #4. |
#4 |
Go Poodle Go Run Poodle! That’s it Go, Go! Oh oh… Hey, you found rule #4! |
Photo of Sarah typing and looking back over shoulder at camera, drawing of computer in front of her. |
|
Here’s rule #4. |
Photo of Sarah typing, fades to photo of Sarah in front of drawing of school and other kids. |
|
Sarah decides to start chatting because almost all her friends are asking her to join them online. That’s all they talk about at school. |
Photo of Sarah typing, drawing of computer in front of her. Box of text superimposed overtop. |
User: Bluesky Password: |
She opens an instant messaging account. She must find a user’s name and a password. |
Drawing of cat appears beside Sarah, fades back to box of text. |
User: Bluesky Password: Whiskers |
Sarah has a cat called Whiskers. She decides to use his name as a password. |
Text box disappears, leaving photo of Sarah typing at computer. Fades to photo of Sarah in front of drawing of school and other kids. |
|
Sarah is having a lot of fun chatting. One day, when she arrives at school, one of her friends is mad at her. Sarah doesn’t understand why. She learns that someone has figured out her password and that person had said insulting remarks using her account. |
Drawings of other kids disappear, leaving one other girl beside Sarah. Drawing of cat appears between them. |
|
After a while, Sarah’s best friend admits that she was the one who did it as a joke. Sarah’s friend knew the cat’s name; it was then very easy for her to figure out her password. |
Photo of Sarah sitting. Drawing of cat appears with red X overtop. Drawing of fields and sky appears instead. Fades to photo of Sarah typing at computer, text box superimposed overtop. Photo of Sarah becomes one where she is looking over shoulder at camera and smiling. |
User: BlueSky Password: sunbeam11 |
Sarah changed her password. She tried to find something harder to figure out; something her friends could not think of. Sarah has learned rule #4 very well. Choose a password that is difficult to guess by others, but easy for you to remember. Do not reveal it to anyone, even to your best friends. |
Poodle lying on ground resting while Klik walks to him. Red car flashes by and Poodle jumps up to join Klik. |
|
After all this, Poodle is tired and needs to rest. Oh Poodle, watch out! We are getting a call! Come Poodle! |
Patrol car drives up and Klik walks towards it. Changes to Klik sitting inside car. Poodle drops in beside Klik. Car door closes and car drives away. |
|
Duty is calling, but remember: To have the ability to foresee danger coming at you is your best protection. If you see or hear something that bothers you in cyberspace, you can disappear quickly… and make sure you tell an adult. |
