Emily met Simon…

45 years old, and…

a sexual predator.

“Why did I trust that guy?”

“Why didn’t I talk about this with my parents?”

YES

Emily made the right decision and told her parents and the police about it.

Emily only wanted to meet “Simon”. She did not consent with what he did to her.

He was identified and criminal charges were laid against him.

This was a difficult situation for Emily, but luckily she has moved on.

The computer has been re-located to the family room and she now only “chats” with people she knows.

This is based on a true story.

99% of Canada’s youth have used the Internet. Eight in ten access it from home.

Among 11 and 12 year old instant messaging users, half of them say they communicate with people they only know through the Internet.

In the 15 to 17 year old group, 72% visit chatrooms, and of this number, 60% visit adult chatrooms or go into the private rooms.

Two thirds of Canadian youth say their parents never sit with them while they surf the Internet, never use filters to block unsuitable sites, and never check to see what sites they’ve visited.

According to Statistics Canada, today’s youth spend more time on the computer than they do in front of the television.

43% of teenagers between 15 and 17 years old have been asked by someone they have met on the Net to meet in person. One out of five accepted the invitation.
