Internet 101
Youth

14 to 17 Years Old - Safety Tips

1. Never give out any personal information, such as your address, phone number, password or photograph, without your parents’ permission.

2. Never make an appointment to meet in person with someone you have met on the Internet without the permission of one of your parents. Remember, the people you meet over the Internet are just like strangers on the street: you can’t believe that what they tell you about themselves is always true.

3. If you use information you find on the Internet for school, make sure you check first to see if it is true, and credit it properly. It may not seem like a big deal, but using someone else’s work without crediting them – plagiarism – is a crime.

4. The most important thing to remember is that what you do on the Internet cannot be erased. Any photos you post or anything you say is on record for years to come, for anyone to look at. Don’t put up anything that you wouldn’t want the whole world – including your mother – to see.
