Is Your Webpage Safe?
Info
- If you have a webpage or website, you should make sure that you take the following precautions when posting information online:
- Invite your parents to visit your website with you, and respect the Internet safety rules your family has established. Remember, using the Internet is not a right; it is a privilege and a responsibility.
• Photos: Try to avoid putting up photos altogether – once you post something on the Internet it’s out of your control and can be downloaded by anyone. A sexual predator can use photos to identify you.
• Landmarks: Don’t mention street names or landmarks near where you live. Even without your address, a predator could use this information to track you down.
• Schools: For the same reason, you should never tell anyone online the name of your school or sports team.
- It is extremely important to be aware of the information that you share on a blog, a webpage, or when you chat online. You may be leaving clues behind without even knowing it. A predator will spend hours examining every single piece of information to track a child down.
